Communications in writing

The security level of normal e-mail is considered inadequate for safety-related messages on SBB. The railway therefore developed the secure e-mail system MEMO, which among other features provides a positive, secure indication that a recipient has read a message.

In the future, mobile phones based on GSM technology may allow the exchange of such secure e-mails with train crew members.

In Altstetten, as in the Zurich dispatching center, the MEMO system provides secure e-mail for the communication of orders governing special train movements (Zugsanordnungen), including secure confirmation that the recipient has read the message.
