Lowest level of detail: the interlocking plant

The most detailed level of control is the interlocking plant (Stellwerk) for each station. It is the interlocking plant that governs the reservation of train routings, movement of turnouts, and display of signal indications - and prevents conflicting routes. See assuring safety.

At Altstetten station, the interlocking plant is a Siemens SIMIS-C installed in 1997. (See the German-language Siemens Switzerland web site.)

To set up a path for a train, the operator types in codes for the origin and destination track sections. As the operator types the codes, they appear on a screen separate from the track diagram.

Interlocking plants at other stations

The operators at Altstetten can look only at Altstetten's interlocking directly. Other stations' interlockings can be operated directly only by a person in that station. Since the station is normally under the remote control of Altstetten, its interlocking plant is usually unattended.
